Suggunya | Between Seas, Molas, and Memories

Leer en español

A commitment to audiovisual sovereignty and the decolonization of the Gunadule people's history.

  • Between 1698 and 1702, a Scottish expedition attempted to colonize the Gunadule territory in Darién.
  • For centuries, this history has been narrated by outsiders, systematically erasing the voice and resistance of our people.
  • In European museums, indigenous presence is reduced to a footnote.
  • Suggunya is born to reclaim the right to tell our own version of the past.

A first glimpse of our audiovisual weave

We invite you to watch the pilot sequence of Suggunya: Between Seas, Molas, and Memories.

This visual fragment is just the beginning of our quest to build a work that weaves together the history, the sea, and the poetry of the Gunadule people.

Our film takes an aesthetic approach in which, through intimate shots, we reflect the transmission of knowledge from grandmothers to granddaughters, while, to the rhythm of the sea and the power of ancestral chants, we travel through time and space, reflecting on memory and the place of history.

Suggunya is a living archive, an audiovisual mola woven with every image, and it needs your support to become a reality.

Your contribution strengthens our journey and allows us to move forward with:

  •  Territorial research: Journeys of deep listening and cocreation with grandmothers, grandfathers, and Saglas in the Guna Yala Comarca.
  • Historical research: Deep archival work in Edinburgh, Panama, and Colombia.
  • Creative development: Production of the pilot sequence and securing historical archival rights.

Weaving memory to heal history

  • Gunadule filmmaker Olowaili Green Santacruz embarks on a journey spanning Colombia, Panama, and Scotland, motivated by the need to uncover the historical origin of her paternal surname.

  • Inspired by the mola as a narrative structure and an ancestral form of writing, the film weaves together documentary, performance, and the spirituality of the Gunadule people.

  • Through staged performances and temporal leaps, Olowaili embodies a 17th-century Gunadule woman navigating the contemporary world, evidencing that this history remains alive.

  • Filming is an act of communal cocreation, where the camera joins the chants of the Saglas and the hands of the grandmothers to weave this grand "audiovisual mola."

  • The journey culminates at the National Museum of Scotland, where Olowaili will place a mola woven by the women of her community inside the Darien Chest, transforming a colonial artifact into a bridge of dialogue and living memory.

Project officially endorsed by the Guna General Congress

This endorsement guarantees our allies that:

  • The work is built upon deep respect and communal cocreation.
  • The project contributes to strengthening the role of Guna women in communication and the transmission of knowledge.
  • The film addresses our historical episode in direct dialogue with our elders and the living memory of the community.
